Hey fam, I know it’s been a little bit since I’ve written around these parts. Apologies for the quiet blog without warning, but every once in a while a girl just needs a breather. Sometimes I have to go and live life in order to write about it. So that’s what I did. I hugged up on my baby, I left my phone unattended for longer periods of time, I slept. Oh, and I managed to book my first trip EVER to DC!
August 29 marks my and #husbae’s sixth wedding anniversary. We decided to take the opportunity to go to DC as a family because we haven’t taken a vacation this summer (yes, this anniversary trip will include Bean). I’ve talked about visiting the DMV (DC/MarylandVirginia) area for years but nothing came to fruition until recently. There’s just something about the finality of having non-refundable hotel and airfare booked. Come hell, high water, or a Republican President, I’m going for real this time!
I’m pretty excited. Yes, yes, I’m going with my love; however, he’s already been to the area several times. This trip is for me! (twerks in awkwardness) I do have some de facto tour guides. One of my best friends is ready to pop any moment with her little boy and I’m stoked to see them. Another buddy has promised us brunch, which…I gotta confess. I love all things breffis, but I’m rather uninitiated in the ways of bougie Black brunches. I expect wonderment.
Outside that, though? I know very little about DC and its denizens. I’ve heard vaguely about Georgetown Cupcake and its wraparound line for confections. My coworker suggested I visit U Street and cop some Ethiopian food somewhere. I know DC has tons of free museums, beautiful architecture, and… what else?
I definitely plan to see these places:
1. Busboys and Poets restaurant and book store. Because books and nom.
2. The National Mall.
3. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
But that’s about it, so I need your help! Where else should I go in DC that will really knock my socks off about the place? My friends keep telling me “you’re gonna love DC!” But nobody has really been specific. Mind you, I will have toddler in tow and a husband who won’t mind seeing the same touristy places again, but who would rather see something new. My one mantra when traveling is: Dara, don’t be lame. Sounds easy enough, but lame comes real natural these days. It takes a village to save a vacation.
So here’s what I’m looking for: 1) dope views (architecture, nature, skyline) so I can take terrible photos and annoy my Instagram feed, 2) great food that will give me feels 3) at least one place a toddler can kick off her shoes and be three years old, and 4) the one museum I HAVE to visit, because we can’t see them all, and 5) the most DC place in all DC that perhaps will play a little go-go music so I can shake something. You have your marching orders. You have 3 weeks. Help me plan my trip and I’ll shout out your suggestions by name in my obligatory DC trip-recap post!
Oh! I almost forgot! I love meetups. If you live in the DMV area and wouldn’t mind seeing my mug and your mug in the same space, let me know and I will put something in the works. I’d love to meet ya’ll!
Have you ever been to DC? Does it really live up to the hype? Leave your recommendations in the comments for ways I can avoid a lame trip. Or tweet them to me!
